When the New York State Department of Commerce hired advertising agency Wells Rich Greene to conceive the original marketing campaign for New York State, who would have thought this marvel would occur. Designed by Milton Glaser, who also did the design pro bono might I add, expected this campaign to only last a few months. What came from it was one of the most iconic designs in the world today. The logo has become closely associated with New York City versus just New York. When you think of other campaigns from the 49 other states, what comes to mind? I’ll give you a second to chew on that a bit.
With more spin-offs than Vh1 (Which funny enough includes I Love NY), this brand is one of the more undeniable American Logos out there and closely connected with our country.
As for design, the logo itself uses a slab typeface called American Typewriter and is also a rebus. For those wondering:
A rebus (Latin: “by things”) is a kind of word puzzle that uses pictures to represent words or parts of words.
Note the heart which is referred to as “Love”.
To be honest, this brand jumped around a bit on my list and finally settled in at 50. Of course it could belong in the top 10 but I felt it was a great brand to start off the top 50 while giving New Yorkers one more recent to gloat. Red Sox! As I continue with each brand on my list, each will get a more personalized treatment on why it’s placement on the list was given in the first place. As for NY… what’s there to say. We love it.
